Short Financial Checklist: When Your Spouse Passes Away (Washington State)

This is a quick-reference guide to help you navigate the financial and legal tasks that follow the death of a spouse in Washington.
1. Get Certified Death Certificates
- Request 10–12 certified copies
- Order through: WA Dept. of Health – Vital Records1
2. Gather Important Documents
You’ll need:
- Will or trust
- Marriage certificate
- Social Security number
- Insurance policies
- Property deeds & car titles
- Bank/investment statements
- Tax returns2
3. Notify Key Organizations
- Social Security: 1-800-772-1213 — for survivor benefits
- Veterans Affairs (if applicable)
- Cancel or transfer: utilities, phone, memberships, and subscriptions3
4. Contact Financial Institutions
- Bank accounts: Remove deceased’s name or retitle accounts
- Credit cards: Cancel individual accounts, resolve balances
- Loans/mortgages: Notify lenders
- Retirement/investment accounts: Begin transfer/rollover if you’re the beneficiary4
5. File Insurance & Employer Benefit Claims
- Life insurance policies
- Spouse’s employer: Contact HR for unpaid wages, pensions, or benefits
- Health insurance: Check on COBRA or survivor coverage5
6. Handle the Estate (Probate or No Probate)
- File the will with the County Superior Court (even if no probate needed)
- If estate is under $100,000 and has no real estate, you may use a Small Estate Affidavit
- Consider hiring a probate or estate attorney6
7. File Taxes
- File the final joint federal and state income tax return
- Washington has no income tax, but:
- Estate tax applies to estates over $2.193 million (2025)7
8. Prevent Identity Theft
- Notify all three credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian, TransUnion
- Request a credit freeze on your spouse’s accounts
- Monitor for suspicious activity8
