How to Retire Early - Retirement Planning

Wondering how to retire early? These tips and suggestions can help you get a head start on your retirement plans.

How to Retire Early

Many people dream of an early retirement, but few achieve it. Retiring early requires a lot of planning and financial discipline, but the end result is well worth the effort involved. If you are serious about learning how to retire early, implementing these 3 simple strategies today will get you started down the right path:

1. Calculate Your Ideal Retirement Amount

Before you can effectively plan for retirement, you need to know your “end number”. This is the amount of money you will need when you reach your early retirement date. Your numbers should include:

  • The minimum annual income amount you will need to subsist on once you retire
  • The annual income amount you will need to support your desired lifestyle once you retire
  • How large your financial portfolio must be in order to generate your desired annual income amount

Remember to calculate inflation into your retirement planning process. It’s impossible to know for sure how much inflation will occur between now and your planned retirement date, but you can make a pretty good prediction by tracking the inflation pattern over the past 20 years. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has a helpful inflation calculator that you can use to predict inflation when planning for retirement.

2. Avoid Debt

Debt should be seen as a roadblock to your early retirement plans. Although society has accepted debt as a normal part of living, it reduces your cash flow and minimizes the amount of money you can put into your retirement account. Start by paying off debts with high interest rates attached, then move on to debts with lower interest rates until you have paid them all off.

3. Start Saving Now

The earlier you start saving for retirement, the more likely you are to reach your goal of retiring early. You should aim to save between 30 – 50 percent of your income annually if you plan to retire in 15 or 20 years.
